Baldur's Gate 3 Is Now PS5's Highest Rated Game Ever

Really want this game but im worried that the scope and complexity will just swamp me. Csnt even buy it and trade it in if it turns out to be too deep for me. Damn im on the fence tho.

@Kidfunkadelic83 Same here, I'll probably buy it at some point but the gameplay aspect might be a bit too complicated for me. Willing to give it a shot though. Worst case scenario, play it on the easiest difficulty and use youtube as a guide to get accustomed to the gameplay

Deserved. For newcomers, PLEASE do yourself a favor and start on easy difficulty. You can always increase the difficulty later.

@Amusei exactly my thinking. Theres a few beginners guides out there so hopefully i can get up to speed reasonably fast.

This is so tempting. I want to play this immediately. But not only can I not afford it right now, I’ve got at least 4 games I want to play before I play this — specifically Balder’s Gate 1 and 2, and Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2. I know BG3 is gonna blow all of those games out of the water gameplay-wise, so I want to at least give those games a try before experiencing the (presumed) majesty of BG3.

@Amusei @Kidfunkadelic83 It is doable. I had to look up some things during character creation what does what, but once i started playing it slowly starts to make sense (been playing since this weekend because of the deluxe edition). Advise i can give you is to save a lot. And if you accidently use a wrong skill or do something that ends up different than you wanted just reload the save and you can try again. It's all a matter of trial and error basically.

@NinjaWaddleDee Agree with Ninja. Definitely start at lowest level if new. I started with the middle difficulty and struggled especially when not knowing how to play. Believe me, it is still hard at that low level and you can always increase it. Also the game autosaves, but at the beginning, manually save more often.

Also, if you don't know D&D like me, do not be afraid to look online when leveling up on what is best to choose for skills/etc. You do not need to follow the comments as no decision is the wrong one, but it is good to understand them better by players who know how they affect game style. And as you level up, the game really becomes more fun with new spells, etc. I am at Level 6 now, but when I hit 3 and then 5, they were big jumps.

I've realised that BG3 has consumed my entire life. Fully deserving of the praise, this is one of the greatest games of the generation, if not ever.

Larian as a studio has created a masterpiece and with it they've cemented their place in video game immortality.

This is one of those games I really should hate as it has a lot of things I dislike (turn based, long campaign, lots and lots of dialogue) but the very high praise makes me want to try it. So will wait for a sale I think as I have a feeling I won't enjoy it

Currently giving Spider-Man 1 a repeat playthrough via the PS5 remaster before S-M2 drops next month. I think I'll get to Baldur's Gate 3 over Xmas.

I didn't really understand the mechanics of the game, @Amusei, but after a few hours I understood them much better, and feel pretty confident now that I have completed Act 1.

What I did do what watch some videos so that I chose the class that I wanted as it is a long game, and getting that bit right is crucial. There are also a lot of guides out there explaining how to build your chosen class, and they are well worth watching. I have not watched any videos that contain spoilers, but have watched a few of the 'things to know before you start' videos, and I highly recommend doing that.

The game is fantastic. A game unequalled. You will get the hang of it pretty quickly... 👍

@Jettstyles Thanks! Yeah the game is much more enjoyable for me on easy. There's still some hard fights though, even on easy.

@Kidfunkadelic83 the beginner guides will help you a lot but also have a great understanding what skills and attributes you're choosing for your character. If you find yourself getting stuck in an area, explore and see if you can find some smaller enemy groups to pick off and level up.

I was so very close to completely giving up on it because I didn't understand how to play it and when I listened to some advice a friend of mine gave me I started to find the game becoming more fun.

But yeah, it's a bit of a tough call to make when you're unsure and you'll be stuck with the purchase.

If anyone is on your friend's list with it, maybe see if they will screen share and allow you to take over their gameplay to see what it's like.

I have played through both Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2, @Impossibilium. Indeed, until Baldur's Gate 3, I always cited DoS2 as my favourite game of all time. I have not played through BG1 or 2 at all. In terms of story, now that I am playing through BG3, I really do not feel that I am missing anything. It is a self-contained story with just the occasional reference to events in the earlier games that those that have played them may remember, but they are really unimportant when playing BG3.

As for DoS1&2, whilst I do absolutely recommend them, as I am sure you are aware, they have no connection to BG3 whatsoever (other than being made by Larian), and so are definitely not essential to have played first.

Started it this morning. Very overwhelming but i am enjoying it, went with the Sorc class as well.

I'm only level 5 and there's already been more than one moment that has had me audibly saying in amazement "WTF?! That was even a choice?!".

I mean, why fight enemies when you can turn them on each other and make them literally tear out their own throats? Lovin' it.

Likewise, @General_Disarray, there are so many great moments that I have really enjoyed. The quality of the cutscenes is something to behold. Absolutely top-tier.

I won't deny having reloaded one scene a couple of times just to watch the sheepish grin on one NPC when caught in the act of enjoying a spot of carnal knowledge... 😂

I've been banging on about this game being a masterpiece for a month or so now. So for anyone on the fence about buying the game, all I can suggest is that you get off the fence and enjoy a game that will be played for decades to come...

It's easily game of the year. The score is deserved.

Some nerds are mad about thr amount of budget that was put into the game's cutscenes. I'm honestly all for it. I'm glad thst Larian stayed true to wanting to make a big budget CRPG. This is what the western rpg genre needed to move forward in my opinion.

That top 10 is pretty good. Tetris Effect in particular is a revelatory experience.

Oh come on 🙄 it's 9 reviews. The game looks spectacular no doubt but that 97 belongs to only Rockstar's games and Zelda.

Between the comments about "trial and error" "hard fights on easy difficulty" and how many people are suggesting watching videos before beginning the game it sounds more like a 79 than a 97 to me.

Trial & error is not how I want to play any game ever. I usually play games on easy difficulty b/c, get this, I want them to be easy. If I wanted a hard game I'd play on, oh I don't know, hard mode? And if I need to read guides before I start a game the game is poorly made, full stop.

I'll wait awhile on this one until more normal people get their hands on it and not just the fans. Fan is short for fanatic for a reason.

And I'm not opposed to new game experiences. Elden Ring was my first ever "souls like" game, b/c as I said I play on easy, and it was easily my GotY, I played it fir over 300. Still haven't beaten the final boss flying whale thing, never will, but it was that good of a world. So maybe I'll get this and it will be my GotY as well, but I need more than 9 reviews and 3 dozen people telling me everything wrong with it.🤷

I brought it on steam and regretted it. It's and 8 or 9 out of 10 game because it actually has some improved mechanics over the majority of games that don't try. GTA 6 will take care of that 97 score from 9 reviewers.

@Darylb88 GTA 6 is going to get so much attention that reviewers will bomb it just for the clicks. A massive reason why games journalism is dying an increasingly quick death today. In five years it will be all but gone.

It is really goofy that people are putting so much stock in these numbers - like it is a game itself where you are rooting for your home sportsball team.

I wasn’t talking about story, I was talking about game mechanics — how it’s hard to go back to older games after you’ve played a more refined game that I think BG3 will be, based on reviews. Also an acknowledgment of my enormous backlog of classic games that I’ve never played — which I can play while I’m waiting for BG3 to go down in price. 🙂

Best RPG I've played since The Witcher III. There's a lot more 'RPG' in Baldur's Gate though...

Apart from Demon's Souls, all those other games are PS4 games

If anyone is worried about complexity, it’s a game that can get as complex as you make it. But if you don’t duel class, you’re given the information you need to progress. If you’ve played RPG’s in general, it’ll fit right in.

But generally it’s a game that will let you progress via multiple routes, and you’ll learn as you go, same, again, as other RPG’s.

Games like GTA having a big dominance due to casual gamers only playing the selected popular games every other year and nothing else after that will lead this game, Baldur's Gate 3 to get overshadowed eventually but it will be a hidden gem in the future that's for sure, its great to see something get the spot light instead of the same rinse and repeat open world 1st/3rd person view games for the fifth or so time.

You are absolutely right about there being a marked improvement in the game mechanics from BG1&2 and 3, and to play the first
two after the third would indeed be more... difficult! Indeed, BG1&2 have, for me, aged so badly, that I could not even contemplate playing them, although I have looked at them multiple times whilst they have been on sale.

As for Divinity, those games use a completely different set of rules. No dice involved (or at least, none seen)! They will remain fantastic games in their own right regardless of BG3. DoS2 was my all time favourite game until BG3. Truthfully, playing any game after BG3 will feel like a retrograde step. It is simply magnificent...

Damn makes me want to buy it ...but don't have enough time for this and Starfield ...want to dedicate my time to one ...so seen as Starfield is on gamepass ...this will have to wait

The worst part of using text to communicate is how hard it is to convey tone. I try to use emojis to get that across, but it’s still hard to indicate a lack of seriousness (especially when you’re autistic and tend to write in a more formal and blunt way) 😄

I really hate my brain for seeing ‘top-down turn-based’ games and instantly being disinterested.. same thing with anime.. I think Hades is overrated and Street Fighter 6 although fun, isn't the undisputed king we have all been led to believe (still good tbf). But the other games look about right score / position wise based on the general consensus.

I hope Immortality comes over to the PS5, alongside chained echoes they are the only games I would award a full phat seal of approval 👍 then you may see a switch at the top.

@Mythologue PC gamers giving it that high of a score leads me to believe I'm not going to like it, they're a peculiar hard core bunch. I am intrigued though. Not $60 digital only intrigued, but I'd try a PS5 demo. Maybe some day. 🤷‍♂️

@Kidfunkadelic83 It's not complex at all but inventory management is more of a chore than it needs to be but you can just push crap to the camp chest from anywhere on the map.

@themcnoisy Yeah, those two (Hades and SF6) surprised me and also Tetris Effect and Demon’s Souls.

I haven’t played Hades yet, nor SF6, and I have no doubt they’re great. But like you say, I haven’t heard a lot of buzz about SF6. Is it the greatest fighting game out there? I wouldn’t know. And Hades is one I’m sure to really enjoy but I wouldn’t have expected it to be in the “GOAT” discussion.

Tetris Effect is fantastic and a real zen experience, but I just hadn’t realized it was that highly esteemed. So it’s another of these games listed with less buzz than you’d expect a 93 Metacritic score would be producing. Likewise, Demon’s Souls is superb but Bloodborne is better. And actually the first Dark Souls is probably a better game, if not for the stellar job Bluepoint did with the remaster in making it so beautiful and smooth to play.

I got bamboozled last night just watching a "beginners guide" video on youtube.

Picked it, up. And started a. Couch Co op campaign with my. Partner Believe the hype it's amazing. Split screen ran fine and seamless for the 4-5 hrs we were shocked had gone by.

Takes a couple hrs of trial and error and reading the explanations that pop when you hover over anything in the menu, and then your off and you realize It's Not nearly as intimidating in terms of complexity as it may seem. The controller translation actually works quite well.

Love it, but know That you have to be open to turn based crpg party mgmt/ tactical battles.
If you were OK with it in something like dragon age, dragons dogma, pillars or divinity, you willl be fine. Even if you could still love Witcher if it were turned based, you are already a step ahead, because that's absolutely the crpg type of inventory menu. Yet if you can't get immersed in those style of games, it's likely just not your thing and that's cool too.

I bought it based on reviews and my brother’s recommendation. It’s fantastic. The mechanics are deep enough that it was a challenge at first…then I realized I needed to slow down, explore and pick fights I could win before I pushed too far towards objectives already marked on the map.

Now my folks are all level 4, I’ve won a fair number of encounters, and things are falling in place. This is shaping up to be an all time favorite.

It was a bit of a learning curve to other RPG's but I'm absolutely loving it. I have a single player campaign and a separate 4-player multiplayer for me and my friends.

Sometimes it reminds me of a cross between DragonAge Origins and KotOR.

That score will get some people complaining it's stealing Starfield's thunder. Although given its reception I fully expect Tears of the Kingdom to take the official GOTY crown at the awards.

Good enough to easily be a Netflix series. Good enough for me to find myself curtailing the day around just trying to loot some stuff and get back to work. Good enough for me to lose optimal sleep. Good enough to get people into the genre that otherwise wouldn’t be… Good enough to be GoTY

Highest rated game on the PS5 is a PC game.

Then again the PS5 (and XSX) are just mediocre PC's minus all the benefits of that platform.

Been playing since PS5 “early access“ and am just wrapping the last few quests in the underdark. This game is addictive as crack, looks and plays amazing (quality mode is the way to go, this ain’t a COD fps).

As soon as the credits are done I’m starting up a new game, new class.
