@nomither6 yes i know that. ive played and beat the game two years ago.

Im just replaying through it then trying to get back into the Cold Heart DLC

@nomither6 I still think Infinite is the best game of the series but that might be because it was the first one I played (PS+ freebie back on PS3). In fact, the Bioshock demo I played early on in the PS3 era and wasn’t impressed with it!

I did play the whole series through the Collection on PS4 and agree the story etc for the first game is fantastic and WYK is an iconic gaming moment.

The DLC for Infinite is highly recommended if you’ve not played it though!

@Thrillho I preferred Infinite too as I thought it was more balanced than the first game, which the final third dragged on for too long. I didn't like the 2nd game at all.

@Thrillho fair enough. i’m just not a fan of the sky setting and change of direction but i can see why people prefer it

@JohnnyShoulder yeah it’s unfortunate bioshock 1 has some painful lows to an otherwise work of art , and the game does start to drag . a remake (not remaster) would do it so much justice . maybe a reboot or spiritual successor to the first game and i’d be interested

@nomither6 It is still a banger. The atmosphere was something special at the time and felt more spooky than some straight out horror games.

@JohnnyShoulder The atmosphere is definitely one of the most special things about the original Bioshock. Besides the fact that it's one of the best FPS games of all time, how great the atmosphere was in the game has probably only been duplicated to that level in maybe a handful of games since. I never really thought it was scary, but I do remember how many people thought it was (and experienced that opinion in person watching other people play it at a LAN party).

I definitely need to go back and replay it sometime. I played it originally on Xbox, but I did claim the Bioshock Collection when Sony gave it away on PS Plus many years ago. So, a fresh trophy list is another perk of getting to replay it again.

Onto Rock Band 3 after smashing through 2, Lego and Beatles. The engine’s a lot better and being able to download customs onto a USB cause I’ve got CFW on my PS3 is a godsend. The tracklist is a mixed bag as always and I do wish I had drums and keys but there’s some bangers in there. Cannot wait to absolutely fail Bohemian Rhapsody on vocals. I do like how they’ve continued the trend of having a song by The Who late on too, with I Can See For Miles joining Pinball Wizard and the obnoxiously long Won’t Get Fooled Again from the first two games. It’s honestly just a good soundtrack in many ways though, with The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Big Country, The Smiths etc filling a massive void that Guitar Hero kept leaving during this time period.

Custom songs are brilliant too, loads of sites out there still active and I loaded up a bunch of songs as a proof of concept. Played some Suede and Pavement on guitar and I’m looking forward to trying Common People on vocals, apparently it’s max difficulty.

Plumbing’s just Lego innit. Water Lego.

played little bit of Saga Frontier Remastered digitally for my Playstation 4.

the game is weird for an RPG game. I dont understand what the heck is going on story wise.

im doing the Mystic scenario and now ended up at some port town that has a mansion where the underground cellar has a squid for a boss. Dunno how to beat the damn thing.

@BeerIsAwesome Just wanted to say thanks for continuing to keep me posted with your Sonic marathon efforts, and am glad to see that you enjoyed the Riders games in particular. I think you did the right thing skipping ahead with Zero Gravity. Despite it being easier, it's still better to attempt fresh from its predecessor, whilst the concept is still fresh. I'm curious to see how you got along with the PSP and DS games, and where you're currently up to, but no pressure to reply if it's been too long a gap!

@RogerRoger HE LIVES! (or she, one should never assume)

Not a problem. You actually "disappeared" at the most appropriate time, since I went on holiday to Italy for two weeks. Beautiful country, very hot, and the mosquitos are incredibly bitey. The only gaming I actually did was Pokemon Masters and Genshin Impact dailies on my painfully overheating phone. I'm not convinced about playing great big games on mobile phones, but that's a different argument for another day.

With that in mind, the only two games I've beaten in the time since are both Sonic Rush games. They are apparently the least labyrinthine levels you can find in any Sonic game. I mean seriously, even Sonic 1's stages are more complicated! I think I did press left a couple times though. The two Sonic Rivals games are purely racing games, though not in the same way as Sonic R. They are also very short games, so they can be done fairly quickly, and then it's on to the glorious PS360 era, where we had such classics as Sonic 06, Sonic 4, Unleashed and Generations. Eh...you know what, let's just skip to Frontiers already! 😅

RogerRoger

@BeerIsAwesome Ah, it was fate, then. Agree with you about Italy, by the way. Seems like you enjoyed your trip, which is good to hear. Just tell your phone it'll nearly be winter!

And yeah, also agree with you about the Rush games. Don't forget that the DS version of Colours is essentially Rush 3. Thanks to its implementation of the Wisps, however, it's a lot less linear, and actually rewards exploration to some degree. I love the Rush games, really love 'em, but more for the visceral experience and their overall aesthetic more than anything else. They also boast some of the best soundtracks from the entire series, which is saying something!

Best of luck with Rivals. They're cool for what they are, and quite impressive in many ways, but every time I replay them, I enjoy them a little less, and end up completing far fewer storylines. What's most interesting about them is how they inadvertently predict some of the Hedgehog Engine / Boost Formula gameplay mechanics that'd go on to become series staples after Unleashed.

@RogerRoger Heh, ironically I just got a new phone as a Prime Day deal just this last week.

Ya know, I don't actually have the DS version of Colours (or Generations for that matter), so maybe I should probably look again. I did realise after posting that, that I hadn't started Chronicles, but given it's an RPG, it may be worth starting that one after I've played the final games. Not that it's canon anyway, since half of what passes for a Sonic canon has been Pendered out of existence.

Rivals is good, but it's limited, for lack of a better word. It doesn't feel like there's as much ambition to this one compared to others. Not that it's a bad game, but others are better, and Sonic 06 is worse. 😁

Sonic Superstars just came through the post. So I'll give that five minutes of my time. If the rumours of Microsoft buying Sega are to be believed, it'll probably be the last Sonic game I'll buy on a PlayStation. 🙃

BeerIsAwesome

RogerRoger

@BeerIsAwesome Yeah, as much as I like and respect Chronicles for what it is, it's a total outlier, and something you can drop in whenever, given how little impact it has on the series' core progression (narratively or gameplay-wise). You made me laugh with your "Pendered out of existence" turn of phrase, by the way! Definitely a curious footnote in Sonic's history, in more ways than one (BioWare? BioWare?!).

Rivals sums up the PSP's back-catalogue for me. It's an obligatory "we must have a PSP presence" kind of experience, limited by it's status as a side project on bespoke, slightly underpowered hardware. As with (almost) all of Sonic's games, you can see the kernel of imagination that got everybody going, but then equally clear are all the corners cut along the way. It's a shame it got caught up in the 15th Anniversary hype; I reckon that, given its own space, it could've developed a stronger identity of its own.

Hope you're enjoying Superstars. It's the first major Sonic game I've ignored for a while, but my time (and money) belongs to Spidey this week. I'm looking forward to picking it up in a sale someday. It'll be interesting to see where it lands for you, given you've been immersing yourself in Sonic's history of late.

@RogerRoger I can only really say "fine" about Rivals games. But fine isn't going to win you any plaudits. That's all I can say really.

Funny that I should mention canon, or lack of it, I figured that since Roblox came to PlayStation last week that I would try out the Sonic Speed Simulator. For what it is, it's actually rather good! It's about as close as you'll ever get to seeing a Sonic MMO. I'm absolutely not addicted, I swear!

I've played "enough" of Superstars to know I'll enjoy it, in the same way I know I'll enjoy Frontiers, but haven't really touched it. I just have to get there first. Up next is a PS3 game, which is going to be Unleashed, as that released before Sonic 4. Excellent day stages, terrible night stages, and clingy Amy who just hugs any hedgehog she sees. Someone should book her an opticians appointment. 😅

BeerIsAwesome

RogerRoger

@BeerIsAwesome Oh wow, I didn't realise Roblox came to console with all of its licenced content; that must be pretty neat! Haven't looked at Sonic Speed Simulator much myself (same with the Minecraft thing they did) but I know those who like it, like it a lot. Glad you're enjoying it, at any rate!

And yeah, Amy in that era was just the worst. She's a lot better than she used to be nowadays, but I still have that ingrained childhood "urgh" feeling whenever I see her, which is a real shame. Tells you how bad she was, that the damage continues to be so lasting. It was only with Frontiers that I finally found myself thinking anything other than "you're a garbage character" whenever she was on-screen.

Best of luck with Unleashed on PS3. It's my all-time favourite Sonic game, so be gentle!

@RogerRoger From what I've read, Roblox is just a client of some sort, and all the content is created platform agnostic, so everything is available to every platform equally at the same time. It's really just a small collectathon with some minor combat in it. Though in the races, it does have some surprisingly accurate renditions of levels from various games, including a stage from Sonic Riders! Minecraft Sonic I haven't touched, though.

I think the only people who didn't do Amy the dirty back then were the guys who wrote the Fleetway Sonic comics, but they completely transplanted a whole different personality into her, so in effect she just became Pink Sonic. Although she has got better in recent years, perhaps starting with the Sonic Boom cartoon. That thing was written better than the games it was based on!

I spent way too much of those years defending Sonic Unleashed, so you've got a yes vote from me before I even play it. ☺️

I've been playing blasphemous 2, which is a 2-D metroidvania with the gameplay feel of something like dead cells but with vivid gothic/early modern Catholic pixel art. It might be some of the weirdest and best pixel art I've come across. Gameplay is solid, with spells/mana as well as melee weapons. It's lore descriptions for items make souls games item and lore descriptions seem positively straightforward! Only a couple of hours in and really enjoying it, though I am a sucker for a 2-D metroidvania. It's on PS5 but I'm playing on switch and yes believe it or not, even in the year of our Lord 2023 the switch can handle a pixel art game at 60 fps 🤣

@R1spam Did you play the first Blasphemous? If so, how does the 2nd game compare?

I really enjoyed the first game, but a couple of reviews I've seen for the 2nd game have kind of made me less enthusiastic about getting it.
